We stand behind LA’s Republique restaurant and their decision to add health care for their 85 full-time employees. The money to do so comes from a three percent surcharge added to each customer’s bill. Very reasonable; especially when you consider how many restaurants treat their employees, especially the wait staff. Republique’s method surprised some patrons and actually offended others (notably whining Yelpers). Sure they could have simply raised their prices by 3% but we agree with the statement they are making and the trust they are seeking from their customers

originalAnd those who don't vaccinate are freeloaders! They selfishly benefit from the effort of others while giving nothing in return. Moreover, they unnecessarily increase the risk of illness for those whose health is too weak to permit being vaccinated. Lastly, they put their own children at unnecessary risk. While it's arguable that parents have the right not to vaccinate their children, because this involves the health of the greater public, we think it's an area that should be addressed more directly by public policy.

Juicing for health or enjoy a Soothing Smoothie. I never thought I would jump on any of the health fads. I consider myself health concious. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I watch what I eat and read lables to stay away from processed foods. Still after I recently started making my own smoothies and juice with my blender, I have to say this is the best way to consume them all at once. Right now I'm making my own recepies with fruits and veggies, but they are delicious and I feel so much energy renewed right away. I keep the stalks and some skin on so I can consume the whole produce. Do it how you want, but start now!

Love Actually blows, actually. Much has been said as of late (see below) of the 2003 film Love Actually, as it assumes the status of "holiday classic." We most certainly dispute that assumption and furthermore do not think it is anything about love as it "actually" exists in the real world. "Love Cinematically" might have been an acceptable title (denigration to the cinema notwithstanding). The premise of Love Actually is no more than "if and only if a woman waits passively and exerts no control over the course of her romantic life, will she be matched with a charming, powerful man who will find, adore, and love her." Apple announcements = big let down. Those of us who thought all the "leaks" of the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S were intentionally designed to throw us off the scent of a real announcement, were wrong. No new AppleTV. No fablet device. Instead, we're left with confusion in the cost-conscious market: iPhone 4S for free, or iPhone 5C for $99. Sigh.

originalI heard that the reason that they had to film the episodes in such a disjointed way came down to scheduling conflicts with the actors. The show couldn't get all the actors together for the episodes, so they used body doubles. Either way, it didn't really work for me and I hope they don't do that the next season. Show is still funny though...

As much as we love Arrested Development, we just can't get that into the new stuff due to its... disjointed development. Digital delivery holds the promise of bringing small time, lower budget productions to large audiences, but those productions also tend to be edgier, riskier, and more adventurous. Combine that edginess with the wide-open possibilities of the on-demand digital frontier, and you risk a level of self-indulgence that would make Lindsay Fünke blush. It's a match made in Sudden Valley. In the case of A.D., they started down the zany path of "watch 'em in any order" only to abandon that at the last minute. That sounds like something the Bluth family might do, and while we applaud the show creators' efforts to feel their characters, we wished they didn't. That ever-tumbling plot-orientation of yesterday's A.D. was replaced with an explosion of disconnected mini-biopics. They each go in their own direction and leave us not with a burning desire to find out WHAT THE HELL WILL HAPPEN NEXT?! but with a burning desire to shrug and shake our heads. Netflix, next time you take on a gifted show, make sure you don't let your new media strangeness mess with their mojo.
