First bro-step, now bro-country. 'Tis a dark, soulless time for music indeed.
We’re gonna miss you Dave! You've kept us entertained for years and we wish you the best in your retirement. We agree with Mayor Garcetti and >Los-Angelenos that CBS should create the next iteration of the Late Show in Los Angeles.
Spring brings new life to Hays as the first eaglet emerges from it’s shell. Pittsburghers are jubilant as we pray for his health and await the hatching of his two siblings.
The LAPD needs to re-read the Constitution. They have no right to hoard license plate data collected from police vehicles and telephone poles. Their defense, that vehicles "may" be stolen, sought by an Amber Alert, or driven by a fugitive, is pathetic. The 4th Amendment applies here, and what "may" be possible falls far from implying what is "probable". But we appreciate the challenge of law enforcement, so a compromise could be to let the DMV track this information and release it only by warrant, or to filter out--in real-time--any license plate data that is not related to an ongoing investigation.
The 'Girls' finale was a great way to end a great season! (And we're still hoping to find Marnie's entire 'What I Am' video somewhere.)
4,4 magnitude earthquake today within the city limits. It wasn't bad enough to injure anyone or damage property, but we take it as a reminder that we all need to be prepared for the Big One™.
A long time ago, we used to be fans... and we still are! Guilty pleasure or not, we're looking forward to the Veronica Mars movie!
Congrats to everyone that finished the marathon! You made it harder for us to get to brunch and pig out, but you still made us all proud.
Season 1 finale of True Detective was a let down. We want answers, not philosophy! For that, we can just re-watch Season 7 of LOST.
Mmmmmmm.... Now this looks like a tasty way to spend $250! Thank you, >New-Yorkers.
>Americans and >Environmentalists love Bald Eagles, but none more so than Pittsburghers who have a nesting pair within city limits incubating three eggs. Bald Eagles had been absent from the Pittsburgh area for about 250 years but thanks to reintroduction efforts, which began 30 years ago, there are currently nests on all three rivers according to the Audubon Society of Western Penna. Outsiders may be surprised to learn of the nesting eagles within city limits but Pittsburghers are well familiar with the wildlife that exists in their many wooded areas. Not the least of which are wild turkeys, another majestic bird that, if Benjamin Franklin had his way, would have replaced the Bald Eagle as our national symbol. Click the link to see live activity from the Hays Bald Eagle cam.
Pizza - ummm We love the new fast fired pizzerias. Custom pizzas at a decent price and prepared within 10 minutes. The ones we tried are surprisingly tasty; as good as those you will find at the best mom and pop pizza shops. They will surely impact the business model of the major chains like Dominos, Pizza Hut and Round Table. Serves them right. The new shops have names like Blaze, 800 Degrees, Pieology and MOD Pizza. Check’em out.
Twelve Years a Slave >Americans, do not let this film go down as one of the best pictures never seen. Story, acting, and cinematography are undeniably first class. This film should be seen soon while it is still available on the big screen. It is to >Americans shame that the domestic gross for the Best Picture of 2013 should fall at number 69.
>Pittsburghers mourn the passing of Porky Chedwick, the Daddio of the Raddio. We celebrate the life of the most loved DJ of all time of any American city, bar none. Porky originated the “old sound” in the 1950’s and played the very best of the rare oldies. He sincerely loved and respected his fans.
Rest in peace Porky!
One of Porky's big sounds from the early '60's, Swingin' Little Chicky by the Belltones: http://www.youtu
Hooray for Lupita Nyong'o! Well-deserved recognition and a heartfelt acceptance.
'12 Years A Slave' wins Best Picture! The Oscar Academy got it right!
We are heartened by the rain. And it is not the typical light sprinkles that puts the local networks on “Storm Watch.” It’s a bonafide winter storm from the Pacific. On Friday it dropped 2 1/4 inches on downtown Los Angeles and more in the foothills. The storm generated warnings of flash floods and mudslides and created 12 foot waves at some beaches. Last night some San Gabriel Valley residents were awakened by two reverse 911 calls; the first warning of a tornado (“…take shelter now…”) and the second warning of flash floods. Despite our elation over the rain experts say it will do little to relieve the drought. Nevertheless it’s better than nothing. And we love it.
A look at what might be! It's just a map, but it's enough to awaken our imagination and focus our hope for better public transportation!
Jimmy Fallon’s debut as host of “The Tonight Show.” We love his energy. His talent comes from the heart. What an opening night! Congratulations Jimmy!
House of Cards keeps getting better. Smart, thrilling, takes no shortcuts--or prisioners! Thanks for the binge, Netflix.
NBC, keep The Michael J Fox Show on the air! It has a great mix of comedy, from the smart and subtle to the wacky and offbeat, while also managing to endear. It's worth taking a chance on and is so much better than that spastic caricature-driven melo-comedy on other networks.
We never knew, but The Black Panther Party had a funk band called 'The Lumpen'... now that's some new history for >African-Americans
We are appalled by the numerous killings of dogs being carried out at the behest of the government. It's not like the >Russians found out yesterday that they'd be hosting the Olympics. They've had years to address this problem, and yet they've chosen to be reactive rather than proactive about this ethical issue. Russia has a long way to go before earning the respect of the international community.
Farewell (again) to Jay Leno! We'll remember him fondly as somewhat conniving and somewhat funny. Until next time (we say farewell) Jay!
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. "I think you should be serious about what you do because this is it. This is the only life you've got."
We're a day away from the greatest event in sports. This is going to be one of those match up...original
Start of the 3rd and the only interesting, exciting thing so far has been Bruno Mars and RHCP defibrillating the heck out of the place!
>new-yorkers prove once again why they rule the culinary world.
CBS, we thank you for cutting out almost all mention of dance, electronica, metal, rock and alternative music at the Grammys. Because those are dead or dying genres and all we really want is to have an indistinct medley of bland mid-tempo pop performances with overamplified audience cheering (to make it exciting, the same way a laugh track makes a sitcom funny!) crammed down our indiscriminate barnyard gullets.
Andy Sandberg is awesome, but best actor at Golden Globes?! Brooklyn 99 is te-rri-ble! (Middle syllable with a rolled "r".)
"The Americans" returns February 26 !

Beyoncé, sometimes we hate to love you, but damn! This last week, you got us, pure and simple. We'll humbly bow down now.
Without wasting too much time on this idiot, we give kudos to A&E for removing Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty, even if only temporarily.
[Homeland spoiler alert.] So, after surviving two full seasons, Brody is suddenly killed off at the awkward midseason finale. Who cares that he was the most dynamic, controversial character in the story? Unlike Brody's neck, it seems the studio (or Senator Lockhart) wants to make a clean break: Saul is apparently gone (along with Carrie's unborn baby), as is the U.S. setting. And nary a cliff from which to hang in sight. That's a bit worrisome, but the show's always had some flaws, so this could be a good thing. It wouldn't be the first time a show changed course after a couple seasons and hit its stride.
We cannot wait for the return of Homeland and are curious to see if the show will touch upon privacy issues that have recently come to light in America.
There is no question that child abductions are tragic, and that Amber Alert phone notifications (part of the national Emergency Alerts System) are a great idea. But the implementation of this notification program is terrible! iPhone users were jolted awake several times last night by their phone's "Alarm" ringtone, which is designed to sound like a 1950s military base under threat of imminent attack. On iPhones, the Amber Alert system uses this specific ringtone at full volume, even when in Silent Mode or Do Not Disturb is activated. Unless a tsunami is about to wash Los Angeles into the ocean, common sense tells us that particular sound is not necessary or appropriate, especially since it can be triggered in the middle of the night while people are sleeping. It's an all-or-nothing design, where the only option one has is to opt-out entirely. Given the ringtone choice, it wouldn't be surprising if many people did opt out. The poor decision to use this particular ringtone is a lesson in the importance of getting the details right.
Another Netflix hit worth binge-watching! Orange is the New Black is worthy of the praise that has been heaped upon it. It deftly hits an array of notes and makes extreme circumstances readily identifiable. [SPOILER ALERT] She goes to prision!
Even if indie electronic is your thing, it's hard to deny The Naked and Famous create with consistent focus and detail, as they have again exemplified.
Regarding the Venice beach mow-down, we can't help but wonder why more effective vehicle barriers are not in place at the Boardwalk!
As much as we love Arrested Development, we just can't get that into the new stuff due to its...original
I heard that the reason that they had to film the episodes in such a disjointed way came down to scheduling conflicts with the actors. The show couldn't get all the actors together for the episodes, so they used body doubles. Either way, it didn't really work for me and I hope they don't do that the next season. Show is still funny though...
As much as we love Arrested Development, we just can't get that into the new stuff due to its... disjointed development. Digital delivery holds the promise of bringing small time, lower budget productions to large audiences, but those productions also tend to be edgier, riskier, and more adventurous. Combine that edginess with the wide-open possibilities of the on-demand digital frontier, and you risk a level of self-indulgence that would make Lindsay Fünke blush. It's a match made in Sudden Valley. In the case of A.D., they started down the zany path of "watch 'em in any order" only to abandon that at the last minute. That sounds like something the Bluth family might do, and while we applaud the show creators' efforts to feel their characters, we wished they didn't. That ever-tumbling plot-orientation of yesterday's A.D. was replaced with an explosion of disconnected mini-biopics. They each go in their own direction and leave us not with a burning desire to find out WHAT THE HELL WILL HAPPEN NEXT?! but with a burning desire to shrug and shake our heads. Netflix, next time you take on a gifted show, make sure you don't let your new media strangeness mess with their mojo.
Horns make me dance...

Twist on the old cucumber slices-white vinegar-chopped garlic-fresh ground pepper-dash of salt mix... Replace cucumber slices with gala or fuji apple slices. Delicious!!
We support Governor Brown's proposal to increase sales tax and raise levies on upper incomes to help raise money for schools and balance the state budget. * sales tax = 1/4 cent per dollar for four years * levies = graduated surcharge on incomes over $250,000 for seven years We will vote in favor if it makes it to the November ballot.
We can't wait for the new episodes of Arrested Development!
Up All Night started out a little shaky but has gotten much stronger - Applegate and Arnett are a great duo!
We support the position of Steve Lopez, LA Times columnist, re California's race to the bottom for quality public education.
Over the past decade state funding for schools has declined by 42% and the effects have been devastating.
The remedies are not simple but as Steve puts it:
You cannot fix any of this in a state more inclined to build prisons than schools, despite projections of a huge shortage of college-educated workers by 2025.
You can’t fix it when you’re the only major oil-producing state with no excise tax, and you refuse to correct the huge property tax advantage Proposition 13 extended to corporations.
You can’t fix it without modest concessions from public employees, including teachers, on pensions and benefits.
And you certainly can’t fix it with three competing and unimaginative tax-increase proposals — one by Gov. Jerry Brown — that would restore some school funding, but are likely to do each other in come November.

Wine and carrots. Not bad, not bad at all.
Fun Fact: Catfish whiskers aid catfish in navigating through tight places, like sewer pipes and picnic baskets.
